Amy takes 1st place in flagstaff in her 1st race as a bull
“60 miles of racing gravel, what was I thinking when I clicked ‘register now’?” asked Amy Cottrell. It started out hot, and at 7,000 feet elevation Amy was breathless but determined to stay with the front group. The 60 mile race was a mass start and difficult to ascertain who was in each category. Amy said “At 8 miles in with 52 to go and 3,000 feet of climbing ahead of me, I needed to settle in and ride my own race. The birch trees, pines, and views of mountains were a delight to race through which made me wonder why I dislike riding on rocks so much. After about 40 miles I wondered if I could finish and then got into a groove and started thinking… just maybe I could be looking at a W.” Amy caught up to some of the lead group and one by one started passing. One female yelled out that Amy was first in her age group. “That was inspiration enough to keep pedaling and pick up the pace,” said Amy. “I hit a rough section toward the end and slammed into a heavy bouldery section and burped my front tire. I slowed on the decent thinking “don’t crash now!” and knew I had a wall to climb with 5 miles to the finish. I got some air from another racer which saved the day.” Amy finished in the Masters Women 40+ category with a time of 3:28 and was the 3rd female overall in the 60 mile event. It was a good day on the bike for Amy. “Racing my first event as a Bull was pretty darn cool and taking the top step was icing on the rocks.”
