Jason Phillips conquers unbound XL 350 while Brett, Sabato and Somers rock the 100

Jason Phillips making his way through some serious mud at the 2023 Unbound Gravel race

On one of the most challenging days ever for the iconic Unbound Gravel race (fka Dirty Kanza), Jason Phillips took on the unbelievable physical feat that is the XL Course - a 350 mile slog through muddy gravel roads in the Flint Hills of Kansas. Riding through the night and giving continuous reports to his Raging Bulls teammates (while they were drinking beer), Jason completed the course in 35 hours and 49 minutes. Veteran of over 20 full Ironman races, Bob Schloegel, said to Jason at the start “Craziest thing ever! Go for it.” Todd Johnson tried to keep Jason going with “Beer at Rick’s house.” While Jamie Messman exclaimed “For F’s Sake! Ur rocking this sh#t Phillips!!” Jason battled throughout the course, one of the most challenging in the history of the race, and managed to cross the finish line with just minutes to spare. Meanwhile, Mike Somers, Sabato Sisillo and Brett Spencer competed in the 100 mile course, just a tad less long than the XL. Mike finished in 9 hours and 26 minutes. Sabato Sisillo crossed the line in 10 hours and 12 minutes. Brett, riding his new high tech steed, finished in 8 hours and 47 minutes. Great job in some really crazy conditions.
